Maximizing your Workout

Learning how to achieve a good workout at the gym can be a bit time consuming and intimidating if this is your first trip to the gym and you do not have a personal fitness trainer. Read on for tips to help you get started.
One of the most important things you can do to maximize your workout is to make sure you are using good form. The proper form technique will vary from one exercise to the next but general guidelines to follow include:
Avoid locking your joints. Locking your joints can cause serious injury.

Never throw down or drop your weights. This can also easily cause injury to yourself or someone else. If you’re working out with heavy weights it’s always a good idea to have a spotter assisting you. Never try to go it on your own.
Along the same lines, avoid swinging your weights. It is better to use movements that are slow and controlled. If you can’t do that with the weight, it’s too heavy and you should move down a notch.

It’s also important to watch your posture. Avoid slumping. Stand up straight to prevent injury.

Take the time to learn how to use the machines the proper way. If you’re not sure exactly how to use a machine, ask a gym employee or a fellow gym member. Remember, everyone started out somewhere. As long as you’re not pestering others, most gym members are quite happy to help.
Focus on a plan to reach your goals. It really won’t help you much to go the gym and just choose random machines for your workout. Workout machines are designed to provide specific results. Focus on machines that will yield the results you want; whether that’s slimming down or bulking up.

Take the time to keep an eye on the intensity of your workout. One of the most common beginner mistakes is to overdo it in the beginning. This can lead to exhaustion, injury and generally, the urge to give up. Increase your workouts in small increments as you see your stamina increasing. This will prevent exhaustion and extreme soreness.

It is also important to make sure you are focusing on consistency. Working out at the same time, on a schedule is essential to getting the most out of your time at the gym. At a minimum, you should devote yourself to at least 2 hours per week, every week, at the gym. Ideally, it’s best to try to get in a workout three times per week. This is one of the best ways to realize the most results from your workout time.

The goal of working out tends to vary from one person to the next, but if you are interested in achieving total body fitness, it is really best to use a combination of aerobic and strength straining. This will allow you to develop muscle. As time goes by you can begin to alternate your workouts; such as working on strength training during one session and aerobic on the next.

Patience is also important. Far too often many people try to push themselves too hard. Achieving fitness and the other goals you have set for yourself will only come through time and dedication. In the end, it is far better to gain muscle slowly than lose weight fast. When you lose weight quickly you are also generally losing muscle mass and that’s not a good thing. Taking the time to focus on your workout, dedicating yourself to it over the long run, will definitely pay off with long term results.
